Hummus Ingredients
A simple dish, consisting of puréed Chickpeas, Tahini, Olive Oil, Lemon Juice, Garlic with Salt, Coriander, Cumin, Cayenne Pepper.
Canned Chickpeas
Place the canned chickpeas in a pot with water to cover. To remove the skins from the chickpeas, rub them between your hands. The skins will float, allowing you to scoop them off and discard them. Optionally bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer the chickpeas for about 20 minutes, or until they can be easily mushed. Strain the Chickpeas and remove any bits of skins before emptying into a food processor.
Dried Chickpeas
Use 1 Cup of Dried Chickpeas soaked in water to cover overnight. Then strain the water out and place into a pot with water to cover (about 8 cups) and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer the Chickpeas until, when you remove one for testing, it mushes easily with a fork. Add more water if needed to keep the Chickpeas submerged. Strain out, removing any skins, and place the Chickpeas into the food processor.
How to make Hummus
Whether you use canned Chickpeas or use dried Chickpeas, you need the Chickpeas very soft. Removing the skins from the Chickpeas does produce a smoother consistency, although this is optional. Once your Chickpeas are ready and rinsed, It’s super easy to put together.
Puréed Chickpeas
Process the Chickpeas until powder or paste like. Stop every once in a while to scrape down the sides and continue to purée. Then add in the remaining ingredients and purée for 4–5 minutes. Until it is Creamy, Airy & Light. Stop every once in a while to scrape down the sides to ensure you get everything.
Empty into a bowl, garnish how you like, and drizzle Olive Oil on top. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. The below was garnished with Parsley, Sumac, and Aleppo.
Garnishing Hummus
Typically, you drizzle olive oil over the top and then add paprika, parsley, and sumac. Some other ideas may include any combination of the following.
- Whole Chickpeas
- Sesame Oil in combination with Olive Oil
- Chili Oil in combination with Olive Oil
- Za’atar
- Aleppo Pepper or Chili Flakes
- Everything Bagel Seasoning
- Sesame Seeds
Recipes using Hummus
Hummus is mainly used as a side dish for dipping vegetables or with pita bread. However, there are other ways to use or include it.
Hummus Salad
I was really surprised at the flavor of this when I decided to just play around and see what it would do. The results were an incredible Hummus Salad, or what I like to call Humina Salada. If you haven’t tried this yet, you really must. This recipe is combined with Mr Salad Dressing to create the Hummus Dressing used for the Humina Salada.
Hummus Dressing
- 1 portion Mr. Salad Dressing
- 1/2 C Homemade Hummus
You could also wrap it up in a Tortilla for a Vegetable Hummus Wrap! Add Chicken, for a Chicken Hummus Wrap!
Hummus & Pita Bread
Hummus is usually served on the side as a dip alongside Pita bread, and just this combination can be served with Rice bowls like the Seven Spice Chicken & Rice or Baharat Chicken & Rice.
Toasted Pita Bread with Hummus
Pita Bread with Hummus is one of my favorite snacks, and I just got to have this every once in a while. With Hummus already prepared, this snack comes together in about 5 minutes.
Heat a pan over medium heat, and wait for it to get hot. Add Pita bread and toast both sides just until softened and warmed through. Brush on some Butter or Garlic Butter, which will melt from the Hot Pita bread, and slather on that Hummus. Top it how you like, my go-to is Everything Bagel Seasoning.
Hummus & Rice
Hummus can also be spread on a plate before topping with Rice to add a creaminess to the Rice.
