Deli Meats

The meats used on the Honey Dill Ovensub are deli meats that are complemented by the honey dill sauce. This includes 3 slices Black Forest Ham, 3 slices Deli Chicken or Turkey, and 2 slices Bacon per ovensub.

Cheese

Swiss cheese is used in this recipe; however, you could go with other cheeses and even shredded cheese. Slice the Swiss cheese corner to corner to create a triangular cheese slice and use 3 slices per ovensub.

Ovensub Cold Vegetables

Onions, lettuce, and tomatoes are the go-to vegetables for topping an ovensub. Slice the onions paper thin and the tomatoes just slightly thicker. With onions at about 1/32 and tomatoes at 1/16 inch thick. Slice the lettuce into thin strips.

When topping off the subs after slathering on the honey dill sauce on the top bun, place onions on first, followed by lettuce and finally tomatoes. You can also place the tomatoes on top of the other bun.

Canadian Honey Dill Sauce

The Canadian Honey Dill sauce is a wonderful sauce to serve with chicken fingers, but it also makes for an incredible ovensub sauce. It’s really easy to put together too. Just combine the ingredients and mix well.

The flavor of this really caught me by surprise. I was just testing it out to see if it works. I mean, we got chicken and ham in the sub. Both of these work well with mustard and honey. But I was immediately taken aback by just how well these flavors made the sub. That’s something special right there.

How to make Honey Dill Ovensubs

Start by laying out the bacon strips on a baking sheet and into a cold oven at 400°F to cook for 13-15 minutes or until crisp to your liking. Meanwhile, wash and prep all the vegetables. Once the bacon is done, strain out the grease to save for other recipes and keep the oven on for toasting the ovensubs later.

Whole package of Bacon on a Baking Sheet

Slice the sub bun in half and butter both sides. Set them on a baking sheet and top the bottom bun with ham, chicken or turkey, bacon, and Swiss cheese. Place into the oven to toast for 5 minutes.
