Hot Dog or Sausage topped with sauerkraut, yellow mustard, and bacon bits. Optionally with ketchup and/or onions served on a steamed or toasted bun. This is a nice Lunch or Snack that can be made up rather quickly with already prepared sauerkraut. While this Sauerkraut Dog is served up as a steamie, you can cook it for a toasted or Toastie Sauerkraut Dog or even both, Steamed & Toasted Sauerkraut Dog. However you cook it, the combination of Sauerkraut, Yellow Mustard & Bacon makes for a delicious bite.
Steamer set
A Steamer set is the perfect kitchen cookware to make hot dogs or sausages with. The bottom pan can be used to fry the Hot dogs or sausages and then filled with water to start steaming the buns. Even the Hot dogs can get steamed if you prefer that over frying them in fat.
Either way, you need a good Steamer Set to easily cook the Hot Dogs or Sausages and soften the Hot Dog Buns. Whether you leave them as steamies, or place them into the oven for toasties, is however you prefer your Sauerkraut Hot Dogs.
Sauerkraut Dog Ingredients
Hot Dogs or Sausages, Sauerkraut, Yellow Mustard/Dijon or Yellow Relish, Bacon Bits or Bacon, Hot Dog Buns.
Optionally with Ketchup and/or Onions.
Hot Dogs
Any kind of Hot Dogs fried in the pan over medium heat with a bit of fat until crisp to your liking. Steam the Buns first so that they can await the fried Hot Dogs when they are ready.
With the Naturally Prime Angus Hot Dogs, remove the skin before frying.
Sausages
Sausages can be used and fried in the pan until cooked through. They can also be cooked in the oven or the Air fryer, and the Air fryer Sausages is perhaps my favorite way to get perfectly plump and juicy sausages. All while steaming the Buns on the stove top. Pan Fry, Air Fry or otherwise cook the Sausages according to package instructions, after steaming the buns.
Sauerkraut
The best Sauerkraut by far is a Homemade Sauerkraut, and it isn’t all that difficult at all. I usually always have a jar of these going. Not only to use in recipes such as this one, but with Hamburgers, Sauerkraut Sausage & Beans), Beans & Hot Dogs, or even just having a spoonful every morning for gut health.
Mustard
For the Mustard, either regular Yellow Mustard or Dijon Mustard can be used. Yellow Relish can also be used in place of and also has the onions in it. Additionally, it contributes an undertone of warming spices, which is really nice.
Bacon
Either Bacon or Bacon Bits, the same ones used for Salads, can be used. With real Bacon, mince the Bacon and fry them up to top the Sauerkraut Dogs. About 1 Bacon slice per Hot Dog or Sausage. Drain out the fat and save for other recipes. Use the remaining fat coating the pan to cook the Hot Dogs or Sausages in.
Bacon Bits are just quick & easy, and I often just use these for the Sauerkraut Dogs. Sprinkle as much as desired.
Steamie Sauerkraut Dog
The Steamie method steams the Hot Dogs Buns and fries the hot dogs in a bit of fat over medium heat. You can steam the hot dogs just as well.
Toastie Sauerkraut Dog
The Toastie method toasts the Buttered Buns over medium heat and fries the Hot Dogs in a bit of fat over medium heat. Optionally, you can just fry the hot dogs and toast the buns in the oven at 400 F for 5 minutes with the hot dogs inserted.
Steamed & Toasted Sauerkraut Dog
The Steam n Toast method places the Steamie or Steamed Hot Dogs (Fried Hot Dogs & Steamed Buns) into the oven to toast. The results are a soft, yet crisp Sauerkraut Dog. That can then be topped off with Sauerkraut, Mustard, and Bacon Bits. If including Onions, the Onions can go on top before the dogs go into the oven.
Spicy Sauerkraut Dogs
Spice it up with a topping of Franks RedHot Sauce or Sriracha to add the desired level of heat. You can also do Chili Flakes sprinkled over top.
Sauerkraut Dogs & Fries
The Sauerkraut Dogs can be enjoyed anytime for a lunch or paired up with some fries for a main course. These are Oven Fries that can be cooked in the Oven while making the Sauerkraut Dogs on the stove top.
