A Toastie is a Toasted/Fried or Grilled Hot Dog in a Toasted Hot Dog Bun. It refers to the cooking method, more so for the bun. Some places will serve the hot dog with any cook method and the Toasted Hot Dog Buns.
Toastie Hot Dog Types
There are many Hot Dog types, and you can pick up and use any kind you like. However, in the East Coast, the brand to pick up is Larsen Hot Dogs. These are only sold on the East Coast. In Montreal, I believe the brands that are often used are Lafleur or Lesters.
SCHNEIDERS REDHOTS
These are pretty good Hot Dogs that I pick up often.
Toastie Hot Dog Buns
Your standard Hot Dog Buns are excellent for the Steamies and can be used for Toasties. Then there is the Straight cut Hot Dogs Buns, which are excellent for Toasties. I haven’t been able to find these where I am at in Ontario. To substitute, I slice a small amount off the sides so that I get the straight cut hot dog buns and then butter and toast them up.

These are your standard Hot Dog Buns which can be buttered and toasted open face or buttered and toasted on the outside.
Homemade Straight Cut Hot Dog Buns
Slice the crust off from your standard hot dog buns so that each side is about as thick as a slice of Bread. Butter and toast the outsides.
How to Toast Hot Dog Buns
There are a few different ways depending on what you are after. Hot Dog Buns can be buttered and placed into a skillet over medium heat, open-faced down. You can also just butter and toast the outsides or straight cut the Buns and butter the outside, so they can be toasted.

Oven Toasties
Another option is to just butter the Hot Dog Buns and place on a baking sheet. Once the Hot Dogs are cooked, place them into the Buns to go into a preheated oven at 450 F for about 5 minutes, or until toasted to your liking.
How to Fry Hot Dogs
Place Hot Dogs in a Skillet over medium heat and cook until browned and crisp with a bit of Oil, Butter, Animal Fat such as Beef Suet or Bacon Grease. Move the Hot Dog around with tongs during cooking for even browning. About 5 minutes, or until crisp to your liking.
Alternatively, you can place the Hot Dogs on a tin foiled Baking sheet and cook in the oven at 400 F for about 10–15 minutes. Optionally Broil to crisp a bit. This technique is useful for larger gatherings.
Toastie Toppings
Top these off with anything you desire to create a wide variety of Doggies. However, in Quebec which is where the terms Steamie and Toastie originate from, there are three main types.
ALL DRESSED
The All Dressed Toastie with Mustard, chopped Onions, and plain chopped Cabbage or Coleslaw or Sauerkraut can be used. Often with Relish, and some will add Ketchup.
MICHIGAN DOGGIE
Topped with Spaghetti or Chili Sauce, with or without chopped Onions.
SUPREME
The Supreme Toastie is topped with Cheese & Bacon.
Toastie Hot Dog Ideas
HP Doggie
Toastie Dressed with Ketchup & Mustard with HP Sauce. The HP Sauce on a Hot Dog is really something else. If you never have, you really must try it.
Toastie Winkies
Another variation called the Winky/Winkies is a cooked Hot Dog on a piece of Buttered Bread on the outside or on both sides. Folded over with a toothpick to hold it in place and baked in the oven to toast the bread up.
Winkies
Steam the Bread briefly, which will make it really easy to fold over without breaking or tearing, and hold with a toothpick. Optionally add a Cheese Slice, Onions, Bacon, Ketchup and Mustard.
Bake at 450 F until nice and toasty.
