Steamie Hot Dogs Header

A Steamie or Steame is a Montreal style Hot Dog where the Hot Dogs are either Boiled or Steamed and served on a Steamed Bun.

Steamie Hot Dog Type

There are many Hot Dog types, and you can pick up and use any kind you like. However, in the East Coast the brand to pick up is Larsen Hot Dogs. These are only sold on the East Coast. In Montreal, I believe the brands that are often used are Lafleur or Lesters.

These are pretty good Hot Dogs that I pick up often.

Steamie Hot Dog Buns

Use your standard Soft & Fluffy Hot Dog Buns. Brush the Buns with Butter and Steam until softened but not Soggy. They only need about 30 seconds on each side.

Steamer

A Master Class Steamer Cookware set is excellent for Hot Dogs. Either Boil the Hot Dogs in the Pan or Steam them in the basket. Add the Hot Dog Buns during the last minute to steam as well.

Empty the Water out and optionally cook up some Onions and/or Bacon in the bottom pan.

How to Steam without a Steamer

If you don’t have a steamer, we’re still good. Just place about 1 cup of water in a skillet and place a pizza screen on top. Place the buns in and cover with a lid that is tall enough to fit the buns without squishing them. I did this for the longest time before getting a steamer set.

How to Steam Hot Dogs

Steamie Hot Dogs are either boiled in a small amount of Water or Steamed. In both cases, only add maybe a cup or so. You can also boil in Broth or Beer.

Place the Hot Dogs in with Water and turn the heat to max to cook for 5 minutes or into the Steamer Basket for 5 minutes. During the last minute, place the Hot Dogs Buns into the steamer with the Bun opening facing down and steam the for 30 seconds. Flip them over, slit side facing up and steam another 30 seconds. Transfer to a plate and place the Hot Dogs in the Buns.

Steamie Toppings

Top these off with anything you desire to create a wide variety of Doggies. However, in Quebec which is where the term Steamie and Toastie originate from, there are three main Hot Dogs.

All Dressed

The All Dressed Steamie with Mustard, chopped Onions, and plain chopped Cabbage or Coleslaw or Sauerkraut can be used. Often with Relish, and some will add Ketchup.

Topped with Spaghetti or Chili Sauce with or without chopped Onions

Supreme

Different types of Cheese can be used. This one is the Cheese Whiz Sauce. Although the Nacho Cheese Sauce can be used or even Velveeta or Cheddar Cheese Slices.

Optionally with Diced Onions as is or sautéed in the Bacon Grease for a bit. Dehydrated Onions can be rehydrated and used too.

Instead of mincing the Bacon and cooking over medium heat until crisp, Bacon Bits you use for a Salad can be used instead.
