Cooked Hot Dogs or Sausages on a Steamed Bun with Sloppys slopped on top, optionally with some Cheese. Then oven toasted for some incredibly good Sloppy Dogs! This recipe comes after making some Sloppys using the leftovers for a lunch or evening snack. Top them off with some Ketchup & Mustard drizzled over before serving.
Sloppy Dog Ingredients
Hot Dog Buns, Hot Dogs, freshly made or leftover Sloppys, Cheese Slices or shredded Cheese (optional).
HOT DOG BUNS
The Hot Dog Buns are first steamed. This softens the buns and adds more moisture so that when they go into the oven they crisp up a bit but don’t go too dry. Steam them over max heat with just a bit of water until they are very soft, but not wrinkly, as this is a sign you have steame them too long. Just a few seconds is all that is needed.
For this, I use my Masterclass 2 tier steamer set that can both steam the buns and cook the hot dogs. Fill the bottom pan with just a small amount of water to start steaming over max heat. Steam the buns for just a few seconds, or until softened. Set aside on a tray just large enough to hold them to await the Hot Dogs or Sausages.
A quicker method is to just microwave them for 20–30 seconds, which softens them as well. Just not as good as steaming them, but either way works.
Hot Dogs
After steaming the buns soft or placing them in the microwave to soften. Heat the pan up over medium heat with a bit of fat to cook the hot dogs to your liking. Move them around, so all sides get cooked crispy. Then transfer them to the Hot Dog Buns to await the Sloppys.
If using Sausages, cook according to package instructions.
SLOPPYS
After removing the Hot Dogs, add the leftover Sloppys to the hot pan to heat through. Add more water if needed to keep it saucy. Ladle over the Hot Dogs and transfer to a preheated oven at 400–450 F to toast for about 5 minutes or until toasted to your liking.
Cheesy Sloppy Dog
Use a Cheddar Cheese Slice and tear it in half. Use each half torn in half again for each Sloppy Dog, placing it into the bun before the hot dog is placed on top. Another option is to use shredded Cheese sprinkled over the top before or after the sloppys filling is placed on, as in the second image, which used shredded St. George Cheese (A Portuguese Cheese).
Sloppy Dog with Ketchup & Mustard
Adding Ketchup & Mustard drizzled over the fresh oven toasted Sloppy Dogs is going to make it pop, it’s so good!
Steamed & Toasted Sloppy Dogs
The Steam & Toast method is one of my favorite ways to enjoy a Hot Dog. It results in the buns being soft from steaming and yet crisp from being toasted. Cooked condiments can go on the hot dogs before going into the oven. While uncooked condiments can be added after coming out of the oven. In this case, with Sloppy Dogs. Both Cheese & the Sloppys can go in to cook with the Hot Dogs. Ketchup & Mustard optionally drizzled over the dogs before serving. A bit of Hot Sauce too, for some heat!
Once the buns are steamed and the Hot dogs are toasted with the sloppys heated up and portioned out to each hot dog. The tray of Hot Dogs gets transferred to a preheated oven at 400-450 F to toast for about 5 minutes, or until toasted to your liking.
