We’re talking about a Salad with Tomatoes, Onions, Cucumbers, Lettuce and Napa Cabbage tossed with Donair Salad Dressing & 1/2 lb of Sliced Donair meat. Optionally with Homemade Croutons and Cheese for a crazy good Halifax Donair Salad.
Donair Salad vegetables
Chopped Lettuce, Diced Onions & Tomatoes, Napa Cabbage, and Cucumbers. Optionally add in diced sweet or hot peppers, radish, shredded carrots or just stay with the standard, Lettuce, Tomatoes & Onions.
Donair Salad Dressing
The dressing consists of Donair Sauce mixed with Neutral Oil and Vinegar. A bit of Parsley and a small amount of sesame oil. Pretty simple right.
Prepare the Donair Sauce separately and once it has thickened some after a few hours. Make the Donair Salad Dressing. Refrigerate this for some before using, and shake well before pouring over the salad.
Spicy Donair Dressing
Add Black Pepper & a small amount of Cayenne pepper to the dressing.
Donair Seasoned Dressing
Add the typical Donair Seasoning to the dressing.
Add in 1 tsp of Paprika, 1 tsp Onion Powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder or more, black pepper & Cayenne to taste. Optionally, with some Oregano.
Donair Meat
Add 1/2 a lb of Sliced Donair meat to the Salad. Make this up in advance, slice, and added to the salad.
Pick up Donair Meat at your local cash and carry, or you can make it with the Standard Donair Recipe as outlined in my Donair Meat post and listed below for convenience.
STANDARD DONAIR RECIPE
The Standard Base Seasoning is 1 tsp per lbs of Ground Meat with the exception of Cayenne Pepper which is 1/8 tsp and upwards. Some only use 1/2 tsp Garlic & Onion per 1 lb of meat. You can start with 1/2 tsp Black Pepper, Onion & Garlic, and 1/8 tsp Cayenne Pepper and then up it based on your preference. Some use Italian Seasoning or Za’atar in place of Oregano. MSG is almost always added.
- Salt
- Oregano
- Garlic
- Onion
- Paprika
- Black Pepper
- Cayenne Pepper
Donair Meat always has some kind of Binder in it. You can read more at my Donair meat post.
Garlic Croutons
In place of the Pita bread, we go with Homemade Croutons using JAH Garlic Butter Oil.
Slice the bread into croutons and allow to dry overnight. Drizzle JAH Garlic Butter Oil over the croutons and bake.
Cheese
A blend of Shredded Mozzarella Cheese and Provolone can be added to the Salad. I use a blend of 3 parts Mozzarella and 1 part Provolone Cheese.
Crumbled Feta Cheese can be used as well.
