Fried Ham & Cheese Sandwich on Buttered bread or Arby’s style on buttered and toasted buns. Either way, it’s a really good sandwich. The trick is to get that Ham sliced very thin to build the sandwich up and fry it. Add your choice of Cheese & Sauce to make it your own.
Fried Ham & Cheese Sandwich Ingredients
Either Buttered Bread or Hamburger Buns, Thinly Sliced Deli Ham, Cheddar Cheese or Cheese Slice, Mustard & Pepper.
Thinly Sliced Ham
The Ham needs to be thinly sliced to really bolster or build up the sandwich. This can come from a store bought Deli Ham (Black Forrest) or some precooked Ham meat portioned and set aside when breaking down a Ham for the Holiday Ham Feast. If buying store bought Deli Ham, ask them to thinly slice it for you. Otherwise, use a meat slicer and slice it yourself paper thin.
Cheese
Use any Cheese you want. I typically have Cheddar Cheese or Old Fort White Cheddar Cheese on hand and just slice thinly to top the sandwiches. You can also opt for already sliced Cheese, either Cheddar, Swiss, or Provolone.
Fried Ham & Cheese Sandwich sauces
There are so many sauces you can top these off with, it’s really entirely up to you. My go to is Yellow Mustard or Dijon Mustard as a quick and easy version. But you can combine this with Mayo or even include other sauces or glazes that you would use for glazed ham mentioned in our Braised Ham recipe. Use these glazes to fry with the ham slices.
Sweet Heat Mayo Mustard Sauce
- 1/4 C Mayo
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 2 tsp Yellow Mustard
- 1 tsp Frank’s RedHot Sauce
Mild Mayo Sauce
- 1/2 C Mayonnaise
- 1 Tbl Red Greek Sauce
- 1 tsp Sriracha Sauce or to Taste
Fried Ham & Cheese Sandwich on Bread
This is a classic for me, and while I do love the Arby’s Style with all kinds of sauces that can be added with swiss cheese. Sometimes just a fried Ham Sandwich with Cheddar Cheese and Mustard on buttered white bread, just hits.
Arby style Ham Sandwiches
For an Arby’s style Ham Melt Sandwich, butter and toast up some hamburger buns. Add Swiss Cheese for a Ham & Swiss Melt. Wrap up in waxed paper to trap the heat and let the flavors meld for a few minutes and serve like this.
Equipment
- 1 Skillet
Ingredients
- 1 Hamburger Bun - or Bread, buttered
- 90 g Thinly Sliced Deli Ham
- 1 Slice Cheese - or a bunch of thinly sliced cheddar cheese
- To Taste Black Pepper
- As Desired Yellow Mustard - or Dijon Mustard
Instructions
- Heat a skillet up over medium heat and toast the buttered Hamburger Buns. If using Bread, just butter and set aside. You can toast the Bread as well, if desired, for a Toasted Fried Ham & Cheese Sandwich.
- Place Cheese on the bottom bun or one of the bread slices and top with Mustard.
- Add the Ham Slices into the pan and keep tossing around until the juices are evaporated, and the meat has pinked up more and is firmer. You can also add a bit of Ham Glaze to cook the Ham slices in for added flavor. Transfer to the toasted Buns or Bread and sprinkle with Black Pepper to taste. Optionally, add a bit of Sriracha for some heat.
