A Mustardy Yellow Relish Hot Dog or Sausage, topped with a Yellow Relish made from Refrigerator Pickled Cucumbers, Onions & Mustard. This is a Condiment you really got to try, it’s so good and easy to make. Top it on some Steamed & Toasted Hot Dogs and some Chips on the side.

While this makes for an excellent Snack or Lunch with a side of Chips. Turn it into a Dinner using Hot Dogs or Sausages with a side of Fries, Poutine or Salad.

Use your Favorite Brand of Hot Dogs. Boil in water first and then Pan Fry in some fat until done to your liking.

These are pretty good Hot Dogs too.

Just your Standard Hot Dog Buns. Steam them first, which makes them softer and easier to separate in order to butter them before toasting. You only need a few seconds. If they start to shrivel up, you’re steaming them too long. Steam slit side down first and then flip to steam the bottom.

Standard Hot Dog Buns, or get fancy with other kinds of Hot Dog Buns.

The Yellow Relish relies on Refrigerator Pickled Cucumbers to derive its taste and create the relish. This needs to be made at least 24 hours in advance. But afterwards, it is super easy to put together, anytime. Just combine diced Pickled Cucumbers with diced Onions and add Yellow Mustard.

Fresh Refrigerator Pickled Cucumbers
  • 2 English Cucumbers 
  • 3 C Distilled Water
  • 1 C Distilled White Vinegar (5%)
  • 1 Tbl Sea Salt & Sugar – each
  • 1 tsp Cream of Tartar
  • 1 tsp Dill Weed
  • 1/2 tsp Black Peppercorn, Mustard Seeds, Coriander Seeds, & Allspice Berries 
  • 1/4 tsp Red Chili Flakes
  • 1/8 tsp Cinnamon, Clove, Mace, & Ginger – each, all ground

Combine the following to create the Yellow Relish.

  • 3 Tbl Diced Pickled Cucumbers
  • 2 Tbl Diced Onions
  • 2 Tbl Yellow Mustard

Steamed & Toasted Hot Dogs, combine the Steamie & Toastie to create a Soft Hot Dog Bun with a Crisp exterior. It really is one of the best ways to enjoy a Hot Dog. Unless of course you’re in the mood for just a soft Steamie or crispy Toastie.

The Hot Dogs are first boiled in water while Steaming the Buns. The Buns are transferred to a pan to await the Hot dogs. The water is then drained out, and the Hot Dogs are fried in fat for a bit. The Hot Dogs are placed in the buns and transferred to a preheated oven to toast for about 5 minutes.

MasterClass Stack & Steam

This is excellent for Steamed n Toasted Hot Dogs. The Bottom pan is used to boil the Hot Dogs and then later fry them. While the Top is used to steam the Buns.

Add to the Yellow Relish Hot Dog any additional toppings or condiments desired. Including, Bacon, Sauerkraut, Ketchup or Mayo, even a bit of Hot Sauce.

Equipment

  • 1 Steamer Set
  • 1 Small Pan
  • 1 Tongs
  • 1 Small Bowl

Ingredients

  • 4 Hot Dogs
  • 4 Hot Dog Buns - Buttered after Steaming
  • 1 Tbl Fat - Ghee, Bacon Grease, Lard or Neutral Oil for Frying the Hot Dogs

Yellow Relish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 450F with the rack in middle position.
    Place Hot Dogs into the bottom steamer with water to cover, set over max heat. Place the steamer Basket on top and cover.
  • Meanwhile, combine the ingredients for the Yellow Relish in a small bowl, mix and set aside.
  • Once Steaming, add the Hot Dog Buns and steam for a few seconds, slit side down. Flip them over with tongs and steam another few seconds. Transfer to a pan.
  • Empty out the water and place back on the heat with a bit of Fat to fry the Hot Dogs until done to your liking. Transfer the Hot Dogs to the Buns and place into the Oven for 5 minutes.
  • Remove and plate the Hot dogs and top with Yellow Relish before serving. Optionally, add some Ketchup or other Toppings & Condiments.
